CREATING COMMUNITY

The very idea of creating community in online course is viable thing. It has been noticed that students leave their online course when they deal with issues of isolation, fear and frustration during the course. In order to get rid of these issues, instructor has to purposefully and consistently work to build student-student relationship in online course. In our course, we are learning how to interact in our community by participating in meaningful discussion thread.  So creating community in online environment increases the chances of student success.  Following steps are required to build an online community which I LEARNT FROM THIS COURSE:
1: MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE: As Marlene’s availability is felt through the uploading of videos in the introduction of each unit, well- timed announcements and meaningful diagnostic feedback. When a tone of community establishes through the discussion thread replies, students feel comfortable with the instructor, they are more comfortable learning, participating and sharing in learning environment.
2: CREATE A COMMUNICATION PLAN: Creating community means promoting meaningful communication among the learners. Online LMS provides some tools for planning communication like we can see calendars where to do list gives us insight for planning. Well planned Dashboards of each unit never let anything to be missed.  These types of planning for communication reinforce the importance of individual attention and personalized education.
3: ENCOURAGE INTERACTION: In online classroom, the use of synchronous sessions, purposefully decided topic based discussion thread, group work, individual presentations encourage interaction between students-students and student-instructor. “out” of online classroom, study groups can be formed as we have “TTLO Support “ whatsapp group. The meaningful and relevant interactions create not only a community for learners but can also become lasting friendships.
Being deliberate, consistent, and relentless, we can build communities in our online courses that help students to connect with not only with the course materials, but with one another.
